The default donation amount is what a supporter gives when they text just your keyword, without a number.
For example, if your keyword is DONR on 70085 with a default of £5, a supporter texts DONR to 70085 to give £5.
You set the default in the Donation amount field when you set up your campaign. You can change it until the campaign takes its first donation. After that it's locked, so supporters who see an older poster aren't charged an amount they didn't expect.
Supporters can still choose another amount
A supporter can give any whole-pound amount from £1 to £20 by adding a number after the keyword. With a default of £5:
- DONR to 70085 gives £5
- DONR 3 to 70085 gives £3
- DONR 20 to 70085 gives £20
Texts cost the donation amount plus one standard network rate message.
If you don't set a default
If you choose Let supporters choose, supporters must include an amount in their text. If they text just the keyword, we reply asking them to text again with an amount.
Why some donations differ from your default
There are two usual reasons:
- The supporter added a different amount to their text, as above.
- Their network split the donation. O2 and Tesco Mobile split a £20 donation into two £10 payments. The supporter's bill shows two payments, so your reports show two donations too. This costs your charity and the supporter nothing extra.
